In a disturbing turn of events, a suspected drunk driver was arrested by Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies after being involved in a hit-and-run crash just east of Lincoln. The incident occurred near Highway 34 and South 148th Street at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. The driver of a grey Chevy Impala rear-ended a BMW, causing a 14-year-old child in the BMW to sustain head and back injuries. The driver, later identified as 60-year-old Rodney Bottorff of Weeping Water, fled the scene.

Arrest and Discovery

Shortly after the hit-and-run, a deputy spotted the Impala travelling northbound on 148th Street in Waverly and pulled over Bottorff for speeding. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy detected a strong smell of alcohol and marijuana emanating from Bottorff. Despite being confronted by the deputy, Bottorff brazenly declared, ‘you’re not going to arrest me’, before being subdued, handcuffed, and taken into custody.

Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Bottorff was taken to the Adult Detention Facility where he was tested and found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .191, well above the legal limit. Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin expressed relief that no additional injuries were sustained due to Bottorff’s reckless actions. Bottorff now faces a litany of charges, including aggravated DWI, resisting arrest, obstructing, possessing marijuana and paraphernalia, speeding, having an open container, and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
