A Disturbance at the Circle K Convenience Store
On June 17th, a tragic incident unfolded at a southeast Austin convenience store when 35-year-old Jermaine Joseph Sims was involved in a disturbance that ultimately led to his death. The Austin Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.

The Events Leading to Sims’ Death
According to reports, multiple 911 calls were made around 4 p.m. alerting authorities to an ongoing disturbance at the Circle K Convenience Store on the South Interstate Highway 35 frontage road. Witnesses described Sims as “acting erratic” and causing a commotion inside the store, throwing items in his path.
Things took a dangerous turn when Sims allegedly stole a pick-up truck from a gas pump around 4:05 p.m. He then proceeded to drive in the wrong direction on the southbound frontage road of I-35 at Slaughter Lane, resulting in a collision with several other vehicles. Police managed to apprehend Sims by 4:10 p.m., but the situation took a tragic turn.
The Aftermath and Investigations
After being taken into custody, Sims was transported to a local hospital by the Austin-Travis County EMS, where he was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m. The cause of death remains unknown, pending a thorough examination by the medical examiner.
The incident was captured on both body-worn cameras of the attending officers and a dash camera belonging to a private citizen. As per protocol, these videos will be made public within the next 10 days to shed light on the events leading to Sims’ untimely demise.

Two separate investigations will be carried out by the Austin Police Department to uncover the truth behind Sims’ death. The APD Special Investigations Unit, alongside the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, will conduct a criminal investigation. Simultaneously, the APD Internal Affairs Unit, under the supervision of the Office of Police Oversight, will handle the administrative inquiry.
