The Jalgaon Collector’s Office confirmed that the accused, Subhash Bhil, and the victim belong to the same caste and community, dispelling the communal narrative being spread online. Reports of the incident in Chinchkheda village in Jamner, Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, detailed how Bhil was apprehended by police after he had been on the run following the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl.

On June 20, 2024, a violent mob descended on the Jamner police station, demanding that Bhil be handed over to them. The crowd, numbering around 300 individuals, surrounded the station, leading to clashes with police officers trying to protect the accused. The young victim, a member of a tribal family in Chinchkheda village, fell victim to Bhil, her neighbor, on June 11. Bhil, who had been evading capture, was eventually located and arrested in Bhusawal, 29 km from Jamner. CCTV footage from the Gram Panchayat Office captured Bhil leading the innocent child to a temple hall and then to a nearby field, where he committed the despicable acts. The accused had reportedly lured the girl with a puffed rice cone worth Rs 5 before carrying out the heinous assault. Following the crime, Bhil fled into the surrounding fields and forests to evade capture.
