Details of the Incident

The chaotic sequence of events began when an East Canton officer attempted to stop Irwin at the intersection of Wood Street and Nassau Street around 12:05 a.m. As the officer was conducting the traffic stop, gunshots rang out from a distance of about 100 yards on East Nassau Street. It was then that Irwin, riding a motorcycle, caught the attention of the officer as he made his way onto Browning Court and eventually onto Wood Street via Noble Street.

The situation escalated as the officer pursued Irwin on State Route 44, with the chase eventually leaving the limits of East Canton village. Irwin, in a brazen move, turned back to shoot at the officer twice before firing a shot into the air. Miraculously, the officer escaped unharmed and continued the pursuit. Irwin’s attempt to evade the authorities came to an end when he lost control of his motorcycle while trying to pull into a gravel driveway. Despite regaining control and fleeing back into East Canton, Irwin was eventually apprehended by a Hartville K-9 officer on South Wood Street.

Further Developments and Arrest

Following his capture, it was revealed that Irwin had multiple outstanding warrants for felony charges. The suspect was promptly taken into custody, receiving medical treatment before being booked into Stark County Jail. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and Irwin could face additional charges as the authorities delve deeper into the matter.

In the aftermath of the incident, East Canton Mayor David Spencer and Chief of Police Thomas Hinerman expressed their gratitude towards the responding police agencies for their assistance during the pursuit. They commended the dedication and perseverance of the ECPD officer whose efforts led to Irwin’s arrest.
