The West Ridge community is reeling from the tragic loss of two 16-year-old Chicago Public Schools students who were fatally shot in separate incidents over the weekend. The first incident occurred on Friday evening in Budlong Woods on the North Side, where a shooting left one teen dead and two others injured. The victim, identified as Benicio Gomez, was a student at Amundsen High School and a valued member of the school community. On Friday at around 6:57 p.m., Benicio Gomez and two other teens were getting into a car in the 5600 block of North Rockwell Street when they were shot at by a person in a black SUV. Gomez was tragically shot in the back and pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital. Another 16-year-old teen sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was in serious condition, while the third boy was shot in the knee and was in fair condition. The shootings are currently under investigation, and no suspects are in custody.

Principal Kristi Eiler described Gomez as a valued member of the school community in an email to Amundsen students and families. Less than 24 hours after Gomez’s death, Marvel White was shot and killed in a park in Englewood. White, who was going into his junior year at Dyett High School for the Arts, was involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into gunfire, resulting in fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.
