### Tragedy Strikes on the Ocmulgee River

The first incident occurred on Friday afternoon at around 12:16 p.m. when Bibb County deputies, firefighters, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were called to the Ocmulgee River Riverwalk following reports of a possible drowning. Witnesses recounted how a man, later identified as 33-year-old Billy Scott Carter, had been swimming with children along the river trail. As some of the children began to struggle against the current, Carter bravely swam out to help them to safety. Tragically, he disappeared from view shortly after, and his body was discovered by rescue crews just before 1:30 p.m. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a devastated community. Thankfully, all the children involved in the incident were safe and unharmed.

### A Second Tragedy at Frank Amerson Park

Later that same evening, tragedy struck once again as the BCSO and fire crews responded to another drowning, this time at Frank Amerson Park on Riverview Road at the Ocmulgee River. Witnesses reported seeing 19-year-old Eddren Chester of Macon go underwater while swimming and attempted to rescue him. Despite their efforts, Chester went under a second time and could not be located. The Macon-Bibb Fire Department dive team eventually recovered Chester’s body, and he too was pronounced dead at the scene.
