The Lagos State Government Clarifies Cause of Cholera Outbreak

In a recent statement, the Lagos state government has clarified that unregistered tiger nut drinks have not been identified as the cause of the recent cholera outbreak in the state. This comes after reports surfaced suggesting that the outbreak was linked to the consumption of these unregistered beverages.

Initial Reports and Misquoting

Initially, there were reports that Kemi Ogunyemi, special adviser to the Lagos state governor on health, had stated that unregistered tiger nut drinks were the cause of the outbreak. However, the spokesperson of the ministry of health in Lagos, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, has clarified that Ogunyemi was misquoted and investigations into the outbreak are still ongoing.

Details of the Outbreak

On June 11, Akin Abayomi, Lagos commissioner for health, announced that five people had died and approximately 60 residents were hospitalized due to a “suspected” cholera outbreak in certain parts of the city. This number later increased, with 350 suspected cases, 17 confirmed cases, and 15 fatalities reported.

Current Situation

As of June 20, the number of deaths has risen to 24, with 35 confirmed cases of cholera in Lagos. The government is working tirelessly to contain the outbreak and provide necessary medical assistance to those affected.

Efforts to Identify the Source

Authorities have been conducting thorough investigations to determine the source of the outbreak. Contact tracing, similar to what was done during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been carried out to locate the origin of the unregistered tiger nut drinks and prevent further cases.
