An FIR has been lodged against hundreds of individuals for their involvement in a ghastly attack on a police station and the alleged lynching of a tourist in Pakistan’s Swat district. The victim, identified as Mohammad Ismail, was accused of desecrating the Quran, an act considered blasphemous in the country. The incident occurred in Madyan tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a popular tourist destination.

Mohammad Ismail, a 40-year-old resident of Sialkot in Punjab province, was visiting the Swat Valley during the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha. Following reports of the alleged desecration, the police took Ismail into custody. However, the situation escalated when news of the incident spread through loudspeakers in the market, leading to a large crowd gathering outside the police station demanding Ismail be handed over to them.
The confrontation between the mob and the police resulted in injuries to several individuals. Subsequently, the mob set fire to the police station and vehicles, forcing the officers to flee. Ismail was brutally beaten to death, and his body was set on fire, according to reports by DW.
District Police Officer Zahidullah stated, “After that, the people entered the police station and shot and killed the suspect and dragged his body to the Madyan Ada, where they hanged him.” Authorities have initiated investigations to apprehend those responsible for the attack, with a case registered against the organizers of the mob.
Videos of the gruesome incident circulated on social media, showing the mob dragging Ismail’s lifeless body through the streets before setting it ablaze. Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Ali Amin Gandapur, has requested a detailed report from the provincial police chief regarding the incident.

In Pakistan, blasphemy laws stipulate that insulting Islam or Islamic figures is punishable by death. These laws, rooted in a 19th-century British statute, were made more stringent in the 1980s. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has highlighted the prevalence of vigilante justice in Pakistan, with perpetrators of blasphemy rarely facing consequences. Recent incidents include the lynching of a Christian man and a Sri Lankan factory manager in separate incidents.
