A man was shot and killed by a deputy sheriff in Atascosa County, Texas on Friday night. The incident took place in the Royal Oaks Subdivision off FM 476, where deputies had responded to multiple domestic disturbance calls in the past.

The Response

Responding to a call from a woman reporting her husband’s erratic behavior, a deputy sheriff arrived at the residence. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Richard Albert Viscarra Jr., allegedly brandished a large butcher knife and advanced towards the deputy, ignoring commands to stop.

The Confrontation

Viscarra reportedly positioned the knife aggressively and continued to advance towards the deputy, prompting the deputy to fire his weapon. The suspect was struck four times and despite life-saving efforts, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s wife informed deputies that Viscarra had threatened suicide by cop. The incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers. The deputy involved, a 34-year-old with 4 and a half years of experience in law enforcement, has been placed on administrative leave.
