The Arrest of Manila Bulletin Data Officer and Alleged Hackers
In a recent development that has shocked the nation, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has apprehended a “data officer” from the Manila Bulletin along with two other individuals for their alleged involvement in hacking banks and government websites. This arrest follows a series of incidents where hackers breached various online platforms and attempted unauthorized access.

Allegations Against Manila Bulletin Employee
During a press conference held by the NBI, the arrested Manila Bulletin employee revealed startling information. The suspect claimed that he had been instructed by the MB technology editor, Art Samaniego, to carry out hacking activities since 2018 or 2019. These hacking incidents were allegedly then reported by Samaniego in his column for the newspaper.
The suspect, whose identity was concealed during the press conference, asserted that he was responsible for the security of the entire news organization. He also mentioned his association with Samaniego dating back to their time in a hacking group known as “Pinoy LulzSec.”
Denial and Further Allegations
In response to these accusations, Art Samaniego denied any involvement in the hacking activities attributed to him by the suspect. However, the suspect claimed that Samaniego facilitated his employment at the Manila Bulletin and instructed him to conduct hacking attempts, including one on the volunteer app of the 1Sambayan coalition.
The suspect admitted that hacking had become a challenge for him and a way to hone his skills. The Manila Bulletin released a statement affirming its commitment to legal compliance and the expectation that its employees adhere to the law.

Arrest of Additional Suspects
Apart from the Manila Bulletin employee, two other individuals were taken into custody by the NBI. These individuals were identified as a cybersecurity researcher from a company in Bonifacio Global City and a graduating student. The arrests were made possible with the help of an informant who facilitated a meeting between the suspects.
During the apprehension, authorities discovered incriminating evidence on the suspects’ phones, including scripts, databases from government websites, and Facebook users’ credentials. The NBI announced that the suspects would be charged under the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the Data Privacy Act for their illegal activities.
Connection to Hacking Groups
The NBI revealed that the arrested individuals were associated with hacking groups called “LulzSec” and “Globalsec.” The bureau’s investigation into the activities of these groups uncovered a network of cybercriminals who had targeted various institutions and organizations.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by cybercrime and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive information.
