Man Arrested in Stratford for Possession of Illegal Gun and Drugs

A man in Stratford, Connecticut found himself in hot water after being arrested for possession of an illegal “ghost gun” and drugs following a slow-speed pursuit with police on Tuesday.

According to Capt. Jerry Pinto of the Stratford Police Department, Narcotics and Vice detectives were patrolling the west side of Stratford when they noticed a blue Saturn travelling on Bruce Avenue with a Connecticut registration plate that belonged to a black Infiniti.

Suspect Engages Police in Slow-Speed Pursuit

The detectives attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but the driver of the Saturn, later identified as 20-year-old Tayvarie Newton, decided to engage the detectives in a slow-speed pursuit. After a short time, Newton eventually pulled into a driveway on Burritt Avenue.

Illegal Firearm and Drugs Found in Possession

During the investigation, it was discovered that Newton was in possession of an illegal ghost gun. Capt. Pinto explained that a ghost gun is a working firearm made from polymer material that lacks a serial number, also known as a Polymer 80.

Newton was subsequently arrested and charged with a slew of offenses, including illegal transfer of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a large capacity magazine, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, illegal alteration of a firearm with no serial number, illegal possession of marijuana with intent to sell, engaging police in pursuit, misuse of registration plates, no operator’s license, no insurance, and no tint inspection sticker.

Legal Ramifications and Court Date

As a result of the charges against him, Newton was held in lieu of a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 to face the multiple charges brought against him.
