A Plea for Justice

Following the release of the footage, Lewis’ family has called for the officer responsible for his death to face murder charges. His mother, LaRonda Jones, has demanded that the officer be prosecuted like any other individual who commits a crime. Jones highlighted the systemic issue of police violence against Black individuals in Aurora, referencing the death of Elijah McClain in 2019. She emphasized that her son’s death was not an isolated incident but part of a larger problem within the police force.

A Broken System

Jones, along with Lewis’ father, wife, and older brother, as well as their legal team, spoke out against the Aurora police department, accusing them of devaluing Black lives. The family’s lawyer, Edward Hopkins, Jr., criticized the police for releasing the video in a way that portrayed the officers in a favorable light. He noted that Lewis appeared to be caught off guard by the officers’ aggressive approach, likening it to a gang confrontation. The family was shown the video of the shooting last week, but police have not released the raw footage in response to a records request.

Seeking Accountability

The Aurora police department has refrained from commenting further on the incident, citing ongoing investigations into the officer’s actions and department policies. The identity of the officer who shot Lewis remains undisclosed, as attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful. The police unions associated with the Aurora police have not responded to inquiries.

A Demand for Change

Lewis’ tragic death has reignited the conversation around police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement. His family, along with their legal team, is determined to seek justice and hold the officer accountable for his actions. They are calling for a fair and transparent investigation into the shooting, and are urging authorities to address the larger issue of racial bias within the Aurora police department. As the community mourns the loss of Kilyn Lewis, they stand united in their quest for justice and reform..
