Minutes before the shots were fired, the North Dakota Highway Patrol had responded to a hit-and-run injury crash on Interstate 29 involving a pick-up truck belonging to Yousa. The truck had rear-ended a motorcycle, and it is alleged that Yousa intentionally swerved to strike the motorcycle. The motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries but miraculously survived the ordeal.
