The tragedy struck around 11 pm when the Bariha family was peacefully asleep in their humble abode. Reports suggest that a herd of three elephants had been lingering near the village for a few days prior to the incident. Despite warnings from local forest officials to remain indoors, one of the elephants broke into the Bariha household, resulting in the devastating loss of three lives.
Survivors and Injuries
Pana’s husband, Bipin Bariha, narrowly escaped the wrath of the elephant. However, three other individuals sustained injuries in the attack and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Padampur community health center. Compensation and Support
In the wake of the heartbreaking incident, the Divisional Forest Officer of Bargarh, Bikram Dev Pattnaik, announced that a compensation amount of `60,000 has been sanctioned for each of the deceased victims. The Bariha family is set to receive a total of `1.80 lakh in compensation, with further financial aid pending the completion of postmortem reports.

To prevent further such incidents, a team comprising forest personnel and elephant squad members has been deployed in Saldihi village to monitor the movements of the elephant herd in the surrounding area.
