The Chase Begins

In the early hours of Sunday, deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office found themselves in pursuit of a group of motorcyclists on Interstate 85. The chase started at around 2:26 a.m. when a deputy noticed three motorcycles heading north, with one of them lacking rear lights, making it challenging to see in the darkness. Captain Mark McDaniel, the public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, revealed that the deputy attempted to pull over the group near the Webb Road exit after activating his lights to grab their attention. One of the motorcycles slowed down, allowing the deputy to position himself behind the blacked-out vehicle. As the deputy tried to stop the motorcycle around the Peeler Road exit, two of the motorcycles allegedly accelerated to speeds of up to 100 mph in an attempt to evade capture.

With the assistance of two other deputies and a N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper, the pursuit of the two speeding motorcycles continued north on the interstate. Reports indicated that the motorcycles were reaching speeds of between 100 and 130 mph. Near exit 84, two deputies split off to chase the blacked-out motorcycle, while the trooper and another deputy pursued the other motorcycle. The driver of the blacked-out motorcycle allegedly slowed down to around 70 mph to create distance from the other motorcycle. The chase then escalated to approximately 120 mph before the motorcyclist took exit 128, veered off-road, and returned to the northbound lanes of the interstate.

The Dramatic Conclusion

As the chase reached Greensboro, the motorcyclist ran a red light, forcing the deputy to slow down for safety. Despite attempting to negotiate a sharp turn at approximately 70 mph, the motorcyclist lost control and crashed. The impact caused the driver, identified as Jaquan McCray, to be ejected from the motorcycle and break his forearm. Deputies quickly apprehended McCray and called for emergency medical services. During the arrest, McCray disclosed that he was carrying a pistol in his pocket, which was later found in the grass near the crash site.

Aftermath and Arrest Warrant

McCray was subsequently transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro for treatment. However, when deputies checked on him later that day, they discovered that he had been discharged from the hospital. Warrants for McCray’s arrest were issued, prompting the authorities to contact the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in locating and apprehending him. The incident also involved another chase that ended in a similar crash, with the driver fleeing the scene on foot, evading capture.
