The Tragic Incident in Nagpur
A devastating incident unfolded near the Dighori toll plaza in Nagpur, involving a family from the Bagadiya tribe of Rajasthan. The family faced a horrific fate as a car carrying six friends, allegedly drunk after partying at a dhaba, drove onto the footpath where they were sleeping. The repercussions were tragic, with a woman and a man losing their lives, and 15 others sustaining injuries. The incident took place shortly before midnight on Sunday, leaving a community in mourning.

The Victims and the Culprit
The deceased victims were identified as Kantibai Bagadiya, 42, and Sitaram Bagadiya, 30. Among the injured were Sitaram’s wife Kavita and their daughters – Haseena, 4, and Sakina, 2. Other injured family members include 10-year-old Bhusya, Kavita, 32, Parsanbai, 22, Parbai, 18, Balku, 8, Golu, 16, and Hanuman, 32. The family was torn apart by this senseless act of recklessness.
The driver, Bhushan Lanjewar, a qualified fire engineer, was behind the wheel of the Hyundai Verna that tragically ended two lives and caused injury to many others. His friends, all engineering students or graduates, were involved in this heartbreaking incident. They were arrested and charged under relevant sections of the law, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The Aftermath and Investigation
Eyewitnesses detailed the harrowing events as Lanjewar allegedly drove the vehicle back and forth over the sleeping family while trying to escape. The police intervened, and the group was remanded in police custody for two days. Senior inspector Vijay Dighe of Wathoda police station confirmed that the driver and his friends were intoxicated. Blood samples were taken for further analysis, shedding light on the circumstances leading up to this tragedy.
The police investigation revealed that the group was celebrating a birthday at a dhaba before setting out on a joyride. The driver’s reckless actions resulted in a series of unfortunate events that could have been avoided. The car has been impounded for further inspection, and authorities are working diligently to piece together the sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking incident.
