In a tragic turn of events, the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed by Youngstown police early Thursday as Mathue O’Malley, 27. The coroner’s office was notified of his passing at 1:06 p.m. Thursday by St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where O’Malley succumbed to his injuries. Prior to his death, O’Malley was in critical condition following the exchange of gunfire with a Youngstown police officer in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue on the West Side.

The fatal encounter occurred around 1 a.m. on Thursday when a Youngstown police officer responded to a disturbance call at the residence. Upon arrival, the officer was met with gunfire from O’Malley, resulting in an exchange of bullets between the two parties. Sadly, O’Malley was injured in the shootout, while no officers sustained any harm during the incident. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been tasked with conducting an independent investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This unfortunate incident marks the 12th homicide in Youngstown this year and the third in just three days last week.

Prior to O’Malley’s demise, the community was rocked by the loss of local mentor and activist William “Shimmie” Miller, 49, who was found shot to death on Steel Street near Salt Springs Road on the West Side. The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office confirmed Miller’s death at 10:26 p.m. Wednesday, adding to the string of violent incidents plaguing the city.
**Juvenile Involvement in Homicides**
The preceding homicides include the tragic death of Zarian Dothard, 19, who was fatally shot in the 500 block of East Judson Avenue on the South Side. In a surprising turn of events, the family of 17-year-old Lyndale Wilkins Jr. cooperated with authorities by turning Wilkins in following the shooting. Wilkins is currently in the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center pending further legal proceedings.

The recent spate of homicides has raised concerns within the community, with law enforcement attributing some of the violence to reckless behavior during “car meets” in the city.
