A man was arrested by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office on outstanding drug trafficking and weapons charges following an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in May. The incident involved the man accidentally shooting himself in the leg, which led deputies to the scene.

On May 11, deputies responded to a call regarding a man who had accidentally shot himself in the leg. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies noticed a vehicle leaving the driveway. They conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Biggerstaff and Fairview Church Road, where they discovered two women inside the vehicle, 23-year-old Makenna Leeanna Ryan and 31-year-old Sarah Margaret Whitten. Both women are facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking.

Identification of the Suspect

The man involved in the shooting incident was identified as 29-year-old Terry Dwayne Smith. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injury. During the investigation, deputies observed Smith carrying a black bag into a building on the property. According to arrest warrants, Smith was found in possession of approximately 234 grams of meth, four grams of fentanyl, and six grams of marijuana.

Outstanding Warrants and Arrest

Smith had outstanding arrest warrants for trafficking in methamphetamine, trafficking in fentanyl, felony possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and simple possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on a combined $161,000 surety bond on Friday, June 14.
