Vaping Concerns Rise Amongst Young People in Jersey
Vaping amongst young people and children is becoming a growing concern in Jersey, according to Peter Bradley, the director of public health. Expressing worry about the dangers posed to children due to the lack of comprehensive knowledge on the subject, Bradley highlighted the need for more research and understanding.
The government is now contemplating a ban on the sale of disposable vapes from 2025, a move that has already been approved in Guernsey. Deputy Steve Luce, Jersey’s Minister for the Environment, emphasized the government’s commitment to removing single-use vapes from circulation to safeguard the health of young individuals.
While vaping may offer a safer alternative to smoking for adults, the long-term effects on young people and children remain uncertain. Bradley pointed out that vaping could impact brain development, behavior, and potentially lead to nicotine dependency among the youth.
In a bid to address the issue, the UK government had previously aimed to introduce a ban on young people smoking and impose a new tax on vaping products. However, these measures failed to pass through Parliament before its dissolution for the general election.
Deputy Steve Luce highlighted the appeal of disposable vapes to young people, noting their affordability and attractive packaging as contributing factors. If the ban on disposable vapes is approved, it will be included in the Single Use Plastics Law, aligning with environmental goals to reduce waste and promote recycling.
Sarah Ward, from Vape Jersey, emphasized the need for stricter regulations on the sale of vapes to minors. Proposing a licensing system for retailers, Ward suggested revoking licenses for those caught selling to underage individuals. Aaron Want, owner of a vape shop, affirmed his commitment to preventing underage sales and incentivizing customers to recycle used vapes.
As the government and local businesses work towards addressing vaping concerns, it is essential for retailers to exercise vigilance and responsibility in their operations. By implementing stricter measures and promoting recycling initiatives, stakeholders aim to protect the health and well-being of young people in the community.
