Drug Bust in Assam Leads to Arrest of Alleged Peddlers

In a recent joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Police, two alleged drug peddlers were arrested near the India-Bangladesh international border along Assam’s Karimganj district. The operation took place on Saturday night, resulting in the seizure of 30,000 Yaba tablets valued at ₹9 crore.

Details of the Operation

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to share the news of the successful operation. He commended the efforts of the Karimganj Police and BSF-G Branch for their collaboration in apprehending the suspects. The arrested individuals, identified as Saharul Islam and Atiqur Rahman, are local residents who were found in possession of the illicit drugs.

Further Investigation Underway

Following the arrests, BSF officials revealed that they had received intelligence regarding the illegal activity and launched the operation in the Chorarpar area under Ramkrishna Nagar police station. The Yaba tablets were discovered hidden under the seats of an intercepted auto-rickshaw. The suspects are currently detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and are set to appear in court on Sunday.

Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking

Karimganj superintendent of police (SP) Partha Pratim Das stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the narcotic products and track down the suppliers involved in the illegal trade. In addition to this operation, Karimganj Police conducted two separate raids on the same day, resulting in the arrest of five suspected drug peddlers and the seizure of 177 grams of heroin.

Additional Arrests Made

In Karimganj town, police recovered six packets of suspected heroin and arrested three individuals named Sahjahan Ahmed, Niyaz Uddin, and Hasan Uddin. Another two drug peddlers were apprehended in the Sarisha area with 106 grams of heroin. These arrests demonstrate the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on drug trafficking activities in the region.
