Deputy Injured in Tampa Shooting

In a tragic turn of events, a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured in a deadly shooting in Tampa on Saturday night. The incident unfolded after deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence in the 14000 block of Cactus Wren Place. The caller, identified as 48-year-old Rebecca Ann Themelis, reported that her husband, 51-year-old Christos Byron Themelis, had been shot. As deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered the suspect, 19-year-old Christos Alexander Themelis, Jr., and Rebecca Themelis outside the home.

Chaos Unfolds

Deputy Shane McGough, one of the responding officers, can be heard on bodycam footage pleading with Rebecca Themelis to move away from her son. The situation quickly escalated as Christos Themelis Jr. shot his mother and then turned his weapon towards the deputies. In the exchange of gunfire that followed, Deputy McGough sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

Response and Resolution

Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the quick and skillful response of the deputies, stating that they put themselves in harm’s way to protect the community. The suspect, Christos Themelis Jr., retreated into the home and barricaded himself inside. Specialized units, including the SWAT Team, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, and Crisis Negotiation Team, were called in to assist.

Tragic Outcome

Despite efforts to resolve the situation peacefully, deputies discovered that Christos Themelis Jr. had succumbed to his injuries inside the home. Sheriff Chronister expressed sorrow over the loss of both parents at the hands of their son, describing the incident as a tragedy that shook the entire neighbourhood.

Deputies Involved

The five deputies involved in the exchange of gunfire with the suspect were identified as Deputy Shane McGough, Deputy Brandon Schade, Deputy Richard Ziegler, Deputy Bjar Atkins, and Deputy Ciara Moncada. None of the deputies had prior incidents involving the use of deadly force.

Deputy McGough underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his leg and is expected to make a full recovery in three months.
