The Romanian family consisted of Florin Iordache, his wife Cristina (Monalisa) Zenaida Iordache, their two-year-old daughter Evelin, and one-year-old son Elyen, both Canadian citizens.

The Alleged Ringleader

The alleged ringleader of this heinous operation was identified as Thesingarasan Rasiah, a 51-year-old individual from Montreal. Rasiah is now facing a total of 36 charges related to human smuggling activities, with the RCMP revealing that approximately $1.4 million allegedly transited through accounts linked to him over a one-year period.

The Arrests

In a significant breakthrough, the RCMP announced the arrest of four individuals, including the alleged ringleader Rasiah, and issued warrants for four others involved in the smuggling ring. Among those arrested was Joel Portillo, a 38-year-old from Montreal, who is facing 25 charges related to conspiracy to organize, aid, and abet people entering Canada and the United States.

The Ongoing Investigation

Despite the arrests made, four individuals connected to the smuggling operation are still at large. Authorities are actively searching for suspects, including a 43-year-old individual from Saint Regis, Quebec, and a 51-year-old from Akwesasne. While two individuals, Mary June Benedict and Michael McCormick, have turned themselves in and are awaiting court appearances.
