Heartbreaking Case of Child Marriage in Pakistan

A disturbing incident of child marriage has come to light in Charsadda town, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a 12-year-old girl was almost married off to a 72-year-old man. The girl’s father, Alam Syed, had agreed to sell his daughter to the elderly man for a sum of PKR 500,000. Thankfully, the police intervened just before the ‘Nikkah’ ceremony took place and arrested the groom, identified as Habib Khan, along with the ‘Nikah Khwan’.

Continued Violations of Child Marriage Laws

Despite strict laws against child marriage in Pakistan, such incidents continue to occur. Recently, similar attempts were foiled in Rajanpur and Thatta, where young girls were being forced into marriages with much older men. In Rajanpur, an 11-year-old girl was almost married off to a 40-year-old man, while in Thatta, a young girl was forcibly wedded to a 50-year-old landlord. These cases highlight the ongoing challenges in enforcing laws to protect children from such heinous practices.

Recent Arrests in Swat

On May 6, the police arrested a 70-year-old man in Swat for marrying a 13-year-old girl. The girl’s father had arranged the marriage, but thanks to the timely action of law enforcement agencies, the groom, father, Nikkah Khwan, and witnesses were all taken into custody. The minor girl was immediately sent to a hospital for a medical examination to ensure her safety and well-being.

Legal Action Against Perpetrators

In the case of the attempted child marriage in Charsadda, a case has been registered against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old groom, and the Nikah Khwan under the Child Marriage Act. This legal action sends a strong message that such practices will not be tolerated, and those involved will face consequences for their actions. It is crucial to hold perpetrators accountable and protect vulnerable children from being exploited in such ways.

Continued Efforts to Combat Child Marriage

Law enforcement agencies in Pakistan are working tirelessly to prevent child marriages and protect the rights of children. By intervening in such cases and taking swift action against those involved, they are sending a clear message that child marriage is a crime that will not be overlooked. It is essential for society as a whole to come together to end this harmful practice and ensure that all children are given the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment..
