Details of the Incident
According to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, the shooting stemmed from a fight between two individuals. The suspected shooter, identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Malone from Morrow, allegedly got into a confrontation with a 47-year-old man in the food court and opened fire. The violence quickly escalated as Malone continued to walk through the court, shooting a 69-year-old woman from East Point and a 70-year-old woman from Atlanta.
An off-duty police officer working a second job at the mall responded to the chaos and confronted Malone. When Malone refused to drop his weapon, an exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the officer shooting Malone. The swift actions of the officer likely prevented further casualties.
Victims of the Shooting
Three of the victims have been identified as Deborah Hardy, Donna Hardy, and Orlando Garcia. Deborah Hardy, who was released from the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound, recounted the harrowing experience. She and her sister Donna were at the mall with their 3-year-old niece and were caught in the crossfire while trying to grab a bite to eat.
“I didn’t pay them any attention. We were trying to get something to eat,” Deborah recalled. “And so they started shooting. I didn’t even realize I had gotten shot in the leg.” The sisters’ main priority was to protect their young niece during the terrifying ordeal.

Legal Ramifications
Jeremy Malone now faces multiple charges in connection with the shooting, including aggravated assault, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and third-degree cruelty to children. Records from Fulton County Jail indicate that Malone has a criminal history, which may have contributed to the tragic events that unfolded at Peachtree Center mall.
