A 60-year-old man from Portsmouth, Derek Croom, found himself entangled in a fateful altercation with law enforcement that ended in the untimely death of a beloved figure in the community.

On that fateful Sunday afternoon, Derek Croom approached a deputy patrolling near the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway and Wayside Road. Witnesses described him as seemingly distraught, setting off a chain of events that would forever change the lives of those involved.
Things took a turn for the worse when Croom became agitated while being loaded into an ambulance and reportedly struck a deputy. It was at this critical moment that the late Charles City County Sergeant Floyd Miles Jr. arrived on the scene to lend a helping hand. Unfortunately, tragedy struck as Sergeant Miles suffered a sudden medical emergency and later passed away at the hospital.
