The Unveiling of a Decades-Old Mystery

In a small town in Orange County, California, a group of children made a chilling discovery that would haunt investigators for over four decades. In April 1983, while playing near Canada and Old Trabuco roads in what is now Lake Forest, they stumbled upon a human skull in a culvert. This grim find led to an excavation that uncovered around 70 percent of a woman’s remains. Despite the efforts of forensic experts, the victim’s identity remained a mystery for years.

A Breakthrough in DNA Technology

Fast forward to 2022, when the Orange County Sheriff’s Department decided to submit a DNA sample from the unidentified victim to Othram Laboratories. Thanks to funding from the National Missing and Unidentified Person System (NamUs), a genetic profile was extracted and tested. This crucial step allowed Cold Case investigators to delve into investigative genetic genealogy in collaboration with the FBI’s Regional Genealogy Team. Despite their tireless efforts, a direct family connection remained elusive.

A Chance Encounter with a Distant Relative

It wasn’t until late 2023 that a breakthrough finally occurred. Investigators reached out to a distant genetic relative of the victim, who suggested sharing the forensic renderings of Jane Doe on a Facebook group dedicated to missing women from the 1970s and 1980s. Just a month after the images were posted, a woman came forward, believing that the Lake Forest Jane Doe could be her long-lost mother.

The Tragic Tale of Maritza Glean Grimmett

The woman who contacted investigators was none other than the daughter of Maritza Glean Grimmett, a Panamanian native who had married a U.S. Marine in 1978. After giving birth to a daughter, the family moved around the United States before Maritza mysteriously disappeared in California in 1979. Her family never heard from her again, leaving them with unanswered questions for decades.

A Bittersweet Resolution

With DNA samples provided by Maritza’s relatives, Jane Doe was positively identified as Maritza Glean Grimmett, who was just 20 years old at the time of her disappearance. While this revelation brought closure to Maritza’s family, it also opened a new chapter in the investigation into her untimely death.

With the identification of Maritza Glean Grimmett, a long-standing mystery has been solved, but the quest for justice is far from over. The story of Jane Doe has finally come to light, shedding new hope on a case that had remained shrouded in darkness for far too long..
