A team of joint experts is currently investigating the first recorded instance of a finless porpoise in Cambodian waters. The discovery was made after the porpoise was caught and unfortunately killed in a fishing net at the Trapeang Ropov fishing community in Kampot’s Bokor town on June 10th. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first time this species has been identified in Cambodian waters.

The Identification Process
Upon receiving a report from the community about a net-catching incident involving a dolphin, the Provincial Fisheries Administration director, Sar Sarin, led an investigation. Working in collaboration with Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC), the team identified the dolphin as a female finless dolphin (Neophocaena phocaenoides). This particular species had never been encountered in the area before, making it a unique and valuable discovery.
A Sad Outcome
Despite efforts to save the dolphin, it had been trapped in the fishing net for too long and unfortunately passed away. If the porpoise had survived, the team would have released it to track its original location. The body of the dolphin was respectfully buried in the community. Sarin mentioned that there is currently no ban on fishing nets at Trapeang Ropov, but the administration is looking into designating the area as a protected zone where such nets would be prohibited.

Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) has been actively involved in collecting and recording data on marine mammal strandings in collaboration with local fishing communities. While they do not frequently publicize these incidents, they made an exception for the rare finless porpoise stranding. In a separate observation, a young Irrawaddy dolphin was spotted swimming alongside pink dolphins in the Prek Tnaot River in Kampot province.
