In a recent turn of events, Baltimore Police have released body camera footage of a fatal encounter that took place last month at a business in South Baltimore’s Fairfield Area. The incident led to a man losing his life and a police officer sustaining injuries. The footage, which is graphic in nature, shows a group of officers approaching the man, identified as 39-year-old Anthony Ferguson, over an incident that occurred four days prior. Ferguson, who was at work and on a break when officers approached him, eventually pulls out a handgun from his waistband and exchanges gunfire with the officers.

During the encounter, Detective Nicholas Wellems suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shootout with Ferguson, who tragically passed away at a hospital. The Maryland attorney general’s office’s Independent Investigations Division is currently investigating the shooting that took place on the 3400 block of South Hanover Street. The Officers Involved

The officers were identified as Brandall Mable, Nicolas Sturla, Kevin Retamale, and Sgt. Timothy Copeland. Wellems, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was hit but thankfully survived due to the protection provided by the vest.

After being treated that evening, Wellems is currently recovering from his injuries. Police Commissioner Richard Worley emphasised the importance of the bulletproof vest in saving Wellems’ life, stating that if he hadn’t been wearing it, the outcome could have been much more severe.
