Three Men Charged in Connection with El Paso Drug Bust

In a recent turn of events in East El Paso, three individuals have been charged with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. The charges were filed after a seizure of 4.8 kilograms of cocaine, following a series of high-speed evasion attempts that ultimately led to a crash near Chito Samaniego Drive and a disabled vehicle on Gateway East Boulevard.

Undercover Operation Unveils Cocaine Trafficking Scheme

The investigation that led to the arrests began when Homeland Security Investigations agents received information that Alejandro Torres was allegedly in possession of more than 4 kilos of cocaine. Undercover agents made contact with Torres and arranged to purchase the cocaine for $50,000. During the course of the investigation, Torres referred to the kilos as “mochilitas” (little backpacks) in recorded conversations.

Hotel Parking Lot Deal Goes Awry

Torres and a driver, identified as Ricardo Isael Martinez, met with undercover agents in the parking lot of a hotel in East El Paso on May 9. Torres indicated that a second vehicle would arrive with the cocaine shortly after their meeting. A white BMW driven by Alan Daniel Mendoza Cardiel pulled up to the parking lot, with four bundles of cocaine in the trunk. However, law enforcement intervened before the transaction could be completed.

High-Speed Chase and Arrests

Law enforcement officials moved in swiftly as Mendoza attempted to flee the scene in his BMW. A crash ensued, and Mendoza was apprehended. Meanwhile, Torres and Martinez drove off in a Nissan Altima, leading authorities on a high-speed chase. The pursuit culminated in a PIT maneuver by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, disabling the Nissan and resulting in the arrest of Torres and Martinez.

Loaded Handgun Seized

During the arrests, a loaded Glock handgun was recovered from the Nissan Altima. The trio now faces charges related to drug trafficking and conspiracy. An arraignment has been scheduled for June 18 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jose A. Torres in El Paso.
