Despite multiple advisories issued by South Porcupine OPP on social media warning residents about an increased police presence in certain areas, the communication from authorities has been limited. A provincial park in the search area, Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, has been closed to the public, but neither the police nor the park have confirmed if the closure is related to the investigation.

As speculation swirls in the community, residents have been left in the dark with few updates from law enforcement. Requests for interviews with OPP have gone unanswered, leaving many unanswered questions about the ongoing manhunt.

The Suspicious Death of Marcel Thoma

The investigation stems from the discovery of the body of 30-year-old Marcel Thoma in a wooded area in Egan Township, southwest of Matheson. Thoma, a Master Bombardier with the 2nd Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Garrison Petawawa, was reported missing after he was last heard from on May 17. Despite not issuing a media release about his disappearance, OPP shared a missing person graphic on social media.

Initial reports described Thoma’s death as suspicious, with police later confirming it was a “firearm-related” murder. Since then, Lucas MacDonald has been identified as a person of interest in the case, though OPP has not formally named him as a suspect. Authorities believe MacDonald may have information about the murder and are urging the public to exercise caution if they encounter him.
