The Tragic Incident

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the family of a 9-year-old boy has filed a lawsuit against the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City after their son was allegedly sodomized by another juvenile during a summer camp in Independence in 2023.

The young boy, whose identity remains confidential due to his age, was just 8 years old when he attended a BGC summer camp focused on youth sports last summer. Little did he know that this innocent outing would turn into a nightmare.

The Allegations

According to court documents, the survivor and his family claim that during a camp field trip to the swimming pool at James Bridger Middle School in Independence, a juvenile identified as A.R. cornered the boy in a bathroom and committed the heinous act of sodomy. Shockingly, A.R. had a history of inappropriate behavior and had been expelled from his school for touching other students inappropriately.

Despite his troubling past, camp staff allegedly allowed A.R. to roam unsupervised around other campers, putting the safety of all children at risk. The survivor and his family are not only suing the Boys & Girls Clubs but also A.R. himself for sexual abuse, battery, and negligence.

Legal Action

The survivor is being represented by The DeFeo Law Firm and Chionuma Law Firm, both of which are based in Kansas City. The family is seeking justice through a trial by jury, where they hope to receive emotional damages of up to $25,000. The boy has already started therapy to cope with the trauma of the alleged assault, a process that has been described as heartbreaking by his family.

Since the incident, the survivor has been diagnosed with various emotional damages, including shock, loss of self-esteem, and psychosomatic symptoms of distress. These ongoing conditions serve as a painful reminder of the trauma he endured.

Preventative Measures

It is worth noting that staff at Boys & Girls Club summer camps undergo mandatory training sessions before each summer camp session, including child sexual assault prevention training, child abuse awareness training, and mandated reporter training. Despite these precautions, tragedies like the one involving the young boy still occur.

Boys & Girls Clubs offers a variety of summer camp programs for children aged 5 and up, with the group’s camp offerings remaining unchanged since last year. However, the devastating incident has shed light on the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all campers.

Legal Proceedings

A case management conference related to the pending lawsuit is scheduled for September 26 at 1:30 p.m. Both the plaintiffs and the Boys & Girls Clubs will participate in mandatory mediation sessions before any trial takes place. The road to justice may be long and arduous, but the survivor’s family remains determined to seek accountability for the harm inflicted upon their young son..
