An elderly man has been identified as the victim of a tragic house explosion that occurred on Tuesday night in unincorporated Lake Zurich. Timothy Toczylowski, aged 77, was the resident of the destroyed home. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity on Friday evening, June 7, 2024, after conducting a dental examination and comparing it with the deceased’s dental records.

An autopsy conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office revealed that Toczylowski had injuries consistent with inhalation of products of combustion. However, toxicology testing, including carbon monoxide testing, is still pending. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigators, Lake Zurich Rural Fire Protection District, and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday night when emergency services responded to a report of an explosion and fire on North Overhill Road. Upon arrival, they found the home completely leveled, with the homeowner, Toczylowski, unaccounted for. A body of an adult male was recovered from the rubble, which was later identified as the deceased resident.
