First Alleged Incident

The court heard that the first young woman, who is now 21 years old, had been socialising in the city centre after work on the night of 25 June 2022. After consuming five pints of cider, she became separated from her friends and attempted to make her own way home. Not accustomed to drinking heavily, she found herself very drunk and eventually woke up in the passenger seat of a car driven by the accused man.

According to the prosecution, the woman alleges that she was raped while drifting in and out of consciousness. She was later dropped off near her home in the early hours of the morning, and CCTV footage captured her getting into a taxi driven by the accused. DNA samples taken from the man matched those found on the woman’s body.

Second Alleged Incident

The second young woman involved in the case had been working early on 8 August 2022 before going out to socialise with friends. Feeling tired, she hailed a taxi in the city centre and subsequently fell asleep. She awoke to find the accused man engaging in sexual activity with her, leaving her feeling shocked and vulnerable.

The driver then took her to her destination and charged her for the fare. DNA samples taken from him upon his arrest matched those found on swabs taken from the woman’s body. In this instance as well, the accused claimed that the sexual encounter was consensual and initiated by the woman.

Court Proceedings

Prosecuting counsel Gerardine Small emphasised to the jury that while the two cases were being tried together, each allegation should be treated separately. The court heard that the two women were not acquainted with each other and that the incidents occurred months apart.

The accused man maintained his innocence, stating that the physical interactions with the women were instigated by them and were consensual. The trial continues as both sides present their evidence and arguments.

It is a harrowing case that has gripped the city of Dublin, raising awareness about the safety of passengers in taxis and the importance of consent in all interactions. As the trial unfolds, the true details of what transpired on those fateful nights will hopefully come to light, providing justice for the alleged victims.
