Detention of Indonesian Pilgrims in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabian authorities have detained 37 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims from Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, for visa violations. The pilgrims were found to have pilgrimage visa documents that were not eligible for performing Hajj. The group, consisting of 21 men and 16 women, were accused of intending to perform Hajj with Umrah visa documents during this year’s Hajj season.

Arrest and Investigation Process
The Indonesian Consul General in Jeddah, Yusron B.Ambarie, confirmed that the detained pilgrims are currently being questioned by Saudi police officers. The process of police investigation in Saudi Arabia is known to be swift. The pilgrims had departed from Indonesia to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a transit in Doha, Qatar, before continuing their journey to Medina. However, they were stopped by Saudi police officers at a checkpoint before reaching the Prophet’s Mosque.
Violation of Visa Regulations
During a security check, it was discovered that the pilgrims held Umrah visas but were carrying fake Hajj ID bracelets and cards. Some of them had even forged Hajj visas. One of the detained individuals, identified as ‘SJ’, was functioning as a travel coordinator and had entered Saudi Arabia using a multiple entry visa for one year. The authorities are still searching for another travel coordinator, identified as ‘TL’.
Previous Incidents
Prior to the arrest of the pilgrims from Makassar, the Saudi Arabian authorities had detained 19 Indonesian pilgrims for similar visa violations. However, these pilgrims were later released after being found innocent. The Saudi authorities warned all pilgrims to refrain from attempting to perform Hajj with non-Hajj visa documents.
Deportation of Detained Pilgrims
The 22 Indonesian pilgrims who were previously detained on May 28 for visa violations were deported on Saturday evening, June 1. These incidents serve as a reminder to all pilgrims to ensure they have the correct visa documents before embarking on their Hajj journey to Saudi Arabia.
