In the recent tragic incident that unfolded in Minneapolis, two officers have been identified as the ones who fired at the suspect in Thursday’s mass shooting. Nick Kapinos and Luke Kittock were the officers who took action during the chaotic scene. Kapinos fired his department handgun while Kittock used his department rifle in response to the unfolding events.

The Incident

Officer Jamal Mitchell responded to a shots fired call at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. Upon arrival, Mitchell encountered two men injured in the street, one of whom was later identified as Mustafa Mohamed. As Mitchell approached Mohamed to offer assistance, Mohamed unexpectedly shot Mitchell, leading to the tragic death of the officer. Mohamed continued to shoot at Mitchell even after he fell to the ground.

The Response

Kapinos and Kittock arrived at the scene as Mohamed was still shooting at Mitchell. In a courageous move, the two officers approached the suspect, prompting Mohamed to turn his weapon towards them. In a split-second decision, Kapinos and Kittock returned fire, ultimately striking Mohamed and bringing the violent situation to an end. Despite rendering aid, Mohamed did not survive his injuries, while Kittock was injured in the exchange but has since been released from the hospital.

The Aftermath

In the aftermath of the incident, it was discovered that a firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and a bystander who was shot remains in critical but stable condition in the hospital. Additionally, a search of the apartment building revealed two more victims of the shooting. One of them, Osman Said Jimale, tragically succumbed to his injuries, while the other individual was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds.

The Investigation

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently reviewing body camera and squad car footage as part of their investigation into the events that transpired. The thorough review of the evidence will shed light on the sequence of events and provide clarity on the actions taken by the officers involved.
