Man Shot and Killed in Deputy-Involved Shooting After Crash on I-85
Early Sunday morning in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, a tragic incident unfolded following a crash on Interstate 85. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man was shot and killed in a deputy-involved shooting that occurred after a single-vehicle collision at mile marker 71 in the northbound lanes of I-85.

Driver Flees into Woods
After the crash, the driver of the vehicle fled into the nearby woods, prompting a response from deputies. All lanes of the interstate were blocked for several hours as law enforcement worked to locate the individual.
Suspect identified
The suspect was later identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Daniel Austin Papala, a resident of Spartanburg. When a trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and a firefighter encountered Papala in the woods, he inquired if they were law enforcement. Upon receiving a negative response, Papala revealed he had a gun and requested to be informed when law enforcement arrived.
