According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash fled into the woods nearby. A trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and a firefighter encountered the suspect in the woods, later identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Daniel Austin Papala from Spartanburg.
Suspect’s Encounter with First Responders
First responders reported that Papala asked them if they were law enforcement. When they replied in the negative, Papala informed them that he had a gun and requested to be informed when law enforcement arrived. Officials then removed themselves from the woods, and deputies were called to the scene.
