The Dark Secret of Herb Baumeister’s Farm

For years, a peaceful million-dollar farm in Indiana hid a dark secret — it was a serial killer’s playground. Herb Baumeister, a businessman and married father of three, used his 18-acre property in Westfield, north of Indianapolis, as the hunting grounds for gay teens and men in central Indiana beginning in at least 1980.

The Gruesome Discovery

When authorities finally raided Baumeister’s property in 1996, they uncovered a chilling sight – some 10,000 pieces of human remains. Most of these were crushed and burned skeletal fragments of the teenage boys and young men whom he had abducted and murdered in the 1980s and 90s. The remains were hidden in the sprawling yard and adjacent trail of the farmstead, with Baumeister using the fake name “Brian Smart” to lure his victims, whom he met at bars.

The Victims identified

Nearly 30 years after Baumeister’s suicide while on the run from police, authorities have been working tirelessly to identify the victims. The Hamilton County Coroner recently announced that human remains recovered from Fox Hollow Farm were positively identified as belonging to Jeffrey A. Jones, who went missing in 1993. Jones is the third victim to be identified in recent months, alongside Allen Livingston and Manuel Resendez.

The Hunt for Justice

Despite Baumeister fleeing to Ontario, Canada, in 1996 after a warrant was issued for his arrest, he was never charged with the murders and did not admit to any of the crimes in his suicide note. The remaining unidentified bones and bone fragments have been sitting in storage until the Hamilton County Coroner decided to reopen the case in 1996. Various agencies, including the FBI and DNA experts, are now working to identify the additional remains.

The Community Shock

The community was left reeling as the gruesome truth about Baumeister’s actions came to light. His wife, who had initially blocked law enforcement from searching their property, later divorced him as evidence began to pile up against him. The fact that such horrific crimes were committed right under their noses for years was a sobering realization for many residents.
