Motive Behind the Attack

Swati Sathe, DIG (Prisons), stated that the motive behind the fatal assault was yet to be ascertained. If necessary, they will be transferred to other prisons to prevent further violence.

Munna’s Criminal Background

Munna had a tumultuous past, having been brought to Kalamba jail in 2013. He had initially completed a 14-year sentence but had his punishment extended to a life term by the Supreme Court in 2007. Munna was involved in escorting prime accused Tiger Memon from Mumbai to Raigad for the landing of RDX and arms before the devastating blasts on March 12, 1993, which claimed the lives of over 250 people and injured more than 1,400. Additionally, Munna had played a crucial role in ferrying the cache of explosives to Mumbai.

Details of the Attack

The perpetrators of the attack on Munna have been identified as Bablu, Pratik, Ruturaj, Sourabh Vikas Sidh, and Dipak Netaji Khot. These individuals are facing various charges, including those under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The assault took place while Munna was bathing at the well, with the five assailants using extreme force against him. A prison worker who attempted to intervene was also attacked by the group.

Immediate Actions Taken

Following the tragic incident, prison authorities have vowed to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all inmates, particularly high-profile convicts such as those involved in the Bombay blasts case. The decision to separate them from the general prison population and potentially relocate them to other facilities highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for enhanced security measures.
