The Tragic Glider Crash
On May 29, a fatal glider crash near Diamond Valley shook the community as a 65-year-old male resident of Calgary lost his life. The victim, who remains unnamed at this time, was competing in the 2024 Canadian National Soaring Championships when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Cancellation of the Event
The competition director, Tony Burton, made the difficult decision to cancel the Canadian National Soaring Championships immediately after receiving news of the crash. Due to unstable weather conditions and the forecast of rain, the event was called off entirely. This year’s competition had already been declared a “no contest” because of the challenging weather.
Twenty-eight pilots from across Western Canada had registered for the championship, eager to showcase their skills in the challenging sport of gliding.
A Tragic Loss
The victim was described as an experienced cross-country pilot who had been a member of the Cu Nim Gliding Club for many years. His presence in the club was highly valued, and his loss has deeply affected the close-knit community of glider enthusiasts.
The crash took place in a field south of Highway 7, approximately 18 kilometres west of Okotoks and seven kilometres east of Diamond Valley. The lone occupant of the aircraft, the pilot, was declared deceased at the scene, with the glider and his body separated by approximately 100 metres.

Investigation Underway
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched an investigation into the crash, a process that can take months to yield initial findings and potentially years for a final report. Jason Acker, president of the Alberta Soaring Council, emphasized the complexity of such investigations and the time required to determine the cause of such incidents.
Acker noted that the pilot appeared to have attempted a parachute recovery, indicating a conscious effort to mitigate the impact of the crash. The Alberta Soaring Council, representing member organizations like the Cu Nim Gliding Club, is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants in gliding competitions.

While soaring is generally considered a safe sport, it is not without its risks. Despite the precautions taken by skilled pilots and event organizers, accidents can still occur. Unfortunately, in this instance, the worst-case scenario unfolded, resulting in the loss of a valued member of the gliding community.
