Details of the Incident

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s report released on Tuesday, Padilla had fatally shot his wife, Monique Ayala, in their Los Angeles home on the evening of April 27. Already wanted on suspicion of murder and carjacking in L.A., Padilla fled to Simi Valley, where he was eventually confronted by Senior Officer David Maupin and Officer Daniel Stradling of the Simi Valley Police Department.

Police Confrontation

On the day of the incident, Padilla was spotted by Maupin walking on First Street. After confirming his identity from a surveillance video and learning that he was wanted for murder by the LAPD, Maupin approached Padilla in the parking lot of the car wash. Despite being ordered to get on the ground, Padilla refused to comply and instead raised a firearm towards Maupin.

Use of Deadly Force

In a life-threatening situation, Maupin fired multiple rounds at Padilla, who retaliated by firing at the officers as well. The exchange of gunfire resulted in Padilla being shot five times and ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy revealed the presence of cannabinoids, methamphetamine, and amphetamine in Padilla’s system.

DA’s Investigation

Senior Deputy District Attorney Thomas Dunlevy conducted a thorough review of the case, examining over 200 pages of reports, witness interviews, and body-worn camera footage. Based on the evidence presented, it was concluded that the officers’ use of deadly force against Padilla was both reasonable and necessary given the circumstances.
