Manhunt Underway in NEOSHO, Mo.

In a tragic turn of events, the Newton County Sheriff’s Department is currently on the hunt for a 42-year-old man wanted in connection with the brutal slaying of Eric Whittington, 50. The incident occurred at 12:03 a.m. on Thursday on Freddie Lane, located south of Joplin. The suspect has been identified as Joshua William Ray Taft, and a no-bond felony warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Suspect Armed and Dangerous

The charges filed against Taft by the Newton County prosecutor’s office are severe and include second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and first-degree endangerment of the welfare of a child. Authorities have warned the public that Taft should be considered armed and dangerous. Details of the Altercation

According to a probable-cause affidavit filed by Newton County Deputy David Mace, the incident unfolded when a woman called 911 to report that her boyfriend had been shot at their home on Freddie Lane. Deputies arrived on the scene to find Whittington lying lifeless on the front lawn, with an apparent gunshot wound to his chest.

Witnesses Provide Critical Information

Witnesses at the scene revealed that Taft resided at the residence on Freddie Lane with an unidentified individual. A verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Taft’s girlfriend allegedly struck the victim with a cast-iron skillet. Subsequently, Whittington retrieved a machete from his truck and attempted to return to the house.

Deadly Exchange

Taft’s girlfriend reportedly handed him a pistol, and he fired two shots in Whittington’s direction. Shockingly, a 7-year-old stepson of one of the individuals involved in the altercation recounted hearing bullets whizzing past his head. Taft managed to flee the scene before law enforcement arrived.

In the affidavit, Deputy Mace highlighted Taft’s criminal history, noting that he is a convicted felon and a violent offender.
