In a shocking incident at the Aldi supermarket in Carrigtwohill, a 61-year-old woman has been found guilty of threatening and abusive behaviour towards two Ukrainian women. The court heard that Irena Zadvaska directed offensive remarks towards Yaliia Kolomiites, 39, and Cholah Zinaida, 26, as they were shopping for groceries.

The two women had gone to the Aldi store on October 2, 2022, to buy food to prepare a meal for a friend who was visiting. Cholah Zinaida told the court that as they were browsing near the store entrance, Irena Zadvaska approached them and called them “refugee bitches.” Yaliia Kolomiites also testified that Ms Zadvaska made further derogatory remarks, including saying that “more of you should have been killed in Kyiv” and “you should burn in hell.”
However, the defence solicitor argued that it was actually the two Ukrainian women who had directed slurs at Ms Zadvaska and made her feel threatened. Ms Zadvaska, who had been living in Ireland for 18 years and held strong pro-life views, claimed that she was simply commenting to herself about the vegetables she was looking at in the store.
After viewing CCTV footage of the incident, Judge Colm Roberts found Ms Zadvaska guilty of threatening and abusive behaviour. He noted that the footage clearly showed her engaging with the two women and that her denial of the incident was not credible. The judge praised the credibility and consistency of the Ukrainian women’s evidence, while criticizing Ms Zadvaska’s inconsistency and evasiveness.
Despite having no previous convictions, Ms Zadvaska was ordered to make a €250 donation to the charity Chernobyl Children International and was given the benefit of the Probation Act. She was also reminded of the importance of respecting others and refraining from making offensive remarks.
