Tragic Road Accidents Claim Lives in Kasese District

In a series of devastating events, at least five individuals lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in separate road crashes in Kasese District on Monday. The incidents have left the community in mourning and raised concerns about road safety in the region.

Deadly Collision on Kasese-Fort Portal Highway

The most tragic of the accidents occurred along the Kasese-Fort Portal Highway at Makumiani in Kasese Municipality’s Nyamwamba Division. Three individuals tragically lost their lives when a sinotruck vehicle collided with a motorcycle carrying two passengers. The impact was so severe that all three individuals on the motorcycle were killed instantly, with one other sustaining serious injuries.

The deceased have been identified as 23-year-old Morris Thembo, the motorcyclist, along with Allan Masereka and Isoma Boyi, residents of Buhathi-Kasangali Cell in Bwesumbu Sub-county.

Eye-witness Account of the Tragedy

According to eyewitness Daneri Muhindo, the sinotruck vehicle was en route to Kasese when it struck and seriously injured one individual at the Katooke junction. Subsequently, the driver lost control and collided with the oncoming motorcycle, leading to the fatal outcome.

Another Fatal Collision in Nyangereka

In a separate incident in Nyangereka of Hima Town Council, two motorcyclists were involved in a head-on collision that resulted in both riders losing their lives instantly. Additionally, four passengers sustained injuries in the collision.

Efforts to Save Lives

Eyewitness Wilson Masereka reported that the injured individuals were promptly transported to various medical facilities for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kasese Municipal Health Centre mortuary for further arrangements.

The authorities have identified the deceased as 44-year-old Wilson Rukendakenda and a man known as Boy Nyaflow.

Preventable Tragedies Caused by Recklessness

Acting Rwenzori East Regional Police Public Relations Officer SP Luka Mbusa emphasized the importance of road safety and cautioned road users against recklessness. He highlighted that many accidents are a result of human error and could be prevented with responsible behaviour.

Mbusa stressed the need for compliance with regulations, such as limiting motorcycles to one passenger, as overcrowding contributes to the severity of accidents. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing to determine the exact causes and prevent future tragedies.

The recent spate of accidents in Kasese District has underscored the urgent need for improved road safety measures and increased awareness among drivers and passengers. The community is mourning the loss of lives and hoping for swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future..
