In a devastating turn of events, a car burglary at a gas station near Gage and Broadway in South Los Angeles escalated into a fatal police pursuit that claimed the life of an innocent cyclist. The incident, which took place on April 25, involved 23-year-old Germaine Smith of Los Angeles, who was identified as the suspect behind the wheel of a gold Chevrolet Suburban.

Police Chase Leads to Fatal Collision with Cyclist
The pursuit began when officers from the Newton Area responded to a report of a car burglary and located the suspect in the gold Suburban at 48th and Central. Despite attempts to pull over the suspect, he accelerated southbound on Central Avenue, prompting a police chase through the streets of South Los Angeles.
The chase tragically ended when the suspect collided with a male cyclist crossing Hooper Avenue and 46th Street. The impact caused the cyclist, identified as 46-year-old Jose David Monsalve Rojas, to crash into a parked vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries.
Suspect Arrested, Dies from Injuries Days Later
After striking parked and moving vehicles, Smith’s vehicle crashed into a telephone pole at Hooper Avenue and 45th Street. He attempted to flee but was apprehended by police shortly thereafter. Smith was arrested on charges including murder, vehicular manslaughter, and felony evading an officer causing death. His bail was set at $150,000, with additional warrants totaling $327,000.
Following his arrest, Smith complained of back pain and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Although he was cleared for booking the same day, Smith became ill while officers were preparing to transport him to the detention center. He was readmitted to the hospital for further treatment and tragically succumbed to his injuries five days later on April 30. The cause of his death remains under investigation.
