After a brief lull in the weather, heavy rain caused by a cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu has intensified across Kerala, leading to widespread chaos and severe flooding in many areas of the State on Tuesday.

Severe Flooding in Kochi
The downpour that hit Kochi city on Monday night and Tuesday morning resulted in low-lying areas and key roads near Infopark being submerged, disrupting daily life and causing long traffic jams throughout the day. The rain gauge at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) recorded a staggering 103 mm of rain in just one hour on Tuesday morning. While this amount of rainfall is considered a cloudburst event, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not officially confirmed it as such.
Landslip in Kottayam
The heavy rain pounding various parts of Kottayam since Sunday triggered a landslip in the Bharananganam village, damaging seven houses. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties, but extensive crop damage has been reported in the area.
Tragic Incidents
Unfortunately, six individuals lost their lives in various rain-related incidents in the State. In Thiruvananthapuram, a traditional fisherman named John, 64, lost his life when a fishing vessel capsized in the rough sea of Muthalapozhi harbour. Another fisherman, Rajan, 57, of Pambar, near Marayoor, in Idukki, tragically died after falling into a river while catching fish. Additionally, Ashokan, 56, of Aruvikkara in Thiruvananthapuram; Sinan, 14, of Kanhangad; and Eldose, 15, a Class 10 student at Perumbavoor, drowned in rivers. Aravind, a 31-year-old man from Mavelikara, also lost his life after being trapped under an uprooted coconut tree.
Preventative Measures
In response to the heavy rainfall, district administrations have prohibited tourist entry into popular destinations such as Ponmudi in Thiruvananthapuram and Ela Veezha Poonchira in Kottayam. Night traffic has been banned along the Erattupetta-Wagamon route due to landslides in the area. A hill adjacent to the renowned Bali mandapam at Papanasam in Varkala collapsed in the heavy rain, and an uprooted tree fell on a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus in Thoppumpady, Kochi, fortunately without causing any injuries.

Dam Operations
Authorities have raised the shutters of the Malankara Dam in Idukki and the Aruvikkara Dam in the capital following heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam, warning of very heavy rainfall, and a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Idukki, and Thrissur, predicting isolated heavy rain on Wednesday.

Although the southwest monsoon is approaching the Comorin area in the Arabian Sea and is expected to reach Kerala in the next two to three days, the current rain spell is attributed to the cyclonic circulation and remnants of the cyclone storm Remal in the Bay of Bengal.
