Cheshire Regiment Soldier Laid to Rest with Full Military Honours
The burial of Second Lieutenant James Arthur Greenhalgh, of 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment, took place at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner near Neuve-Chapelle. The service was organized by the Ministry of Defence’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), also known as the ‘MOD War Detectives’.

The Story of 2ndLt Greenhalgh
2ndLt Greenhalgh, hailing from Bolton, Lancashire, was a former player for Bolton Wanderers Football Club. He met his tragic end on 22 October 1914 in the village of Violaines during a fierce battle with the enemy. Despite the valiant efforts of his men, he was shot in the head and left behind in the chaos of the conflict.
A Long-Awaited Discovery
For decades, 2ndLt Greenhalgh’s fate remained a mystery as he was listed as missing in action and commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. It wasn’t until 2020 that his remains, along with two other soldiers, were unearthed during the construction of a housing estate on the outskirts of Violaines.
A Sense of Closure
The identification of 2ndLt Greenhalgh brought closure to his family, including his great niece Joanna Potts, who expressed gratitude for finally knowing the fate of her great uncle. The emotional significance of his discovery was palpable as he was laid to rest with the dignity and honour he deserved.
A Solemn Service
The burial service, attended by members of 2ndLt Greenhalgh’s family, was a poignant moment as serving soldiers of 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment carried his coffin to the graveside. The ceremony was conducted by Reverend Gary Birch CF, Chaplain to 19 Regiment Royal Artillery, who emphasized the importance of honouring and remembering those who sacrificed their lives in past conflicts.

A Lasting Tribute
The graves of 2ndLt Greenhalgh and the two unknown soldiers will now be cared for in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Xavier Puppinck, Director for the France Area at CWGC, expressed the honour of playing a part in laying these brave men to rest more than a century after their ultimate sacrifice in Violaines.
