Arrests Made in Connection with the Death of Agricultural Labourer in Tiruvannamalai

In a recent development, four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of K. Murugan, an agricultural labourer from Kottakkal Pudur village near Chengam town in Tiruvannamalai. The suspects have been identified as K. Selvaraj, the village head, his accomplice S. Jeeva, V. Krishnan, and N. Siva. The victim, K. Murugan, aged 48, had been working as a farm labourer for many years, providing for his family through his hard work and dedication.

Allegations of Goat Theft and Imposition of Fine

The series of events leading to the tragic demise of K. Murugan began on May 17 when a group of men, led by village head K. Selvaraj, accused him of stealing goats. Subsequently, Selvaraj imposed a hefty fine of ₹3 lakh on Murugan, a sum that was beyond his means to pay. Feeling trapped and helpless, Murugan was subjected to coercion and intimidation by the village head and his accomplice in an effort to extract the money from him.

Desperate Act and Tragic Outcome

Overwhelmed by the mounting pressure and the unjust demands placed upon him, K. Murugan made a fateful decision to end his suffering by consuming poison at his residence on May 22. He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai but, tragically, succumbed to the effects of the poison and passed away on the following Sunday. His untimely death has left his family devastated and seeking justice for the unjust treatment he endured.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

Following a complaint lodged by Murugan’s wife, M. Valli, the Chengam police initiated legal proceedings against 10 individuals suspected of involvement in the coercion and extortion of the deceased. Four arrests have been made thus far, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining individuals implicated in the case.
