The man known as Conception Bay John Doe, whose severed head was found buried in a dump site 23 years ago, has finally been identified by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Temistocle Casas, a Cuban who came to Canada on a tourist visa, was identified through genetic genealogy that led investigators to his first cousin.

A Surreal Moment for Const. Greg Davis
RNC Const. Greg Davis expressed his shock and disbelief upon learning Casas’s name and seeing his photo for the first time. He described the moment as “surreal” and “crazy,” emphasizing the long journey to finally solve the case after over two decades.
The Discovery of Casas’s Remains
Casas’s remains were discovered by two men looking for tree saplings in a Billy Boot shopping bag in a dump site in Conception Bay near St. John’s in 2001. He had been known as Conception Bay John Doe since the gruesome discovery.
The Investigation and Timeline
After the remains were found, police speculated that the victim may have lived in Quebec, Ontario, or the northeastern United States. Isotope analysis and carbon dating suggested he was born in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The RNC now believes Casas was killed in 1997 or 1998, providing some clarity to the timeline of events.
A Breakthrough in Genetic Genealogy
The RNC had been using genetic genealogy for three years to identify the man, but it wasn’t until a man from the U.S. uploaded his DNA in February 2024 that a breakthrough occurred. This individual turned out to be John Doe’s first cousin, leading to the positive identification of Casas.

The Long Road to Identification
Over the past two decades, the RNC pursued various investigative avenues to crack the case, including isotope analysis, national DNA databases, and dental records. The use of genetic genealogy finally provided the breakthrough needed to identify Conception Bay John Doe as Temistocle Casas.

Const. Greg Davis has made a heartfelt plea for anyone with information about the case to come forward. Despite the identification of Casas, many questions remain unanswered, and the RNC is urging the public to help fill in the gaps in their investigation.
