A British mountaineer, Daniel Paterson, and his guide have been reported missing and presumed dead after reaching the summit of Mount Everest. This heartbreaking news comes in the wake of the recent death of Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui, who tragically lost his life above 8000 metres on the world’s tallest peak.

The harrowing incident involving Paterson unfolded when he and his guide were hit by falling ice while descending from the treacherous mountain. The Briton’s partner, Becks Woodhead, shared the devastating news that retrieving his body may prove impossible as he fell in a spot that is challenging for rescue operations.

According to reports by Fox News, Daniel Paterson is believed to have met his fate in the notorious ‘death zone’ of Mount Everest, an area above 8000 metres where low oxygen levels can lead to impaired judgement and severe illness. The 39-year-old adventurer had successfully reached the summit before tragedy struck during his descent.

Woodhead, in a crowdfunding post, paid tribute to Paterson’s monumental achievement, strength, and determination. She recounted the heartbreaking moment when he went missing during the descent, with no contact or sighting since. The BBC reported that Paterson and his guide, Pastenji Sherpa, were struck by falling ice when a cornice collapsed.

The mountaineer had been part of a group organized by 8K Expeditions, who described him as a beacon of positivity and unwavering determination. Woodhead has raised over KSh 22.3 million towards rescue efforts, nearing the target of KSh 25 million. However, she updated the post to acknowledge the grim reality that rescuing Paterson from his precarious position may be unfeasible.

As the search operation faces challenges, Woodhead reassured supporters that every avenue is being explored to ensure the donations are utilized effectively. The heartbreaking turn of events has left the mountaineering community in mourning, with hopes dwindling for a successful rescue mission.

In a separate development, a video has emerged of Cheruiyot Kirui discussing his plans to conquer Mount Everest just before his fatal accident. The young banker expressed his ambition to summit the world’s highest peak without supplemental oxygen, drawing inspiration from his previous climbs on Mount Kenya and Mount Kilimanjaro.

The mountaineering world is reeling from these tragic losses, underscoring the perilous nature of scaling Mount Everest. As the families and loved ones of Daniel Paterson and Cheruiyot Kirui come to terms with their untimely deaths, the mountain stands as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by those who dare to conquer its heights..
